Alongside five other weavers, Genevieves aim is to engage the public in public processes including weaving and spinning. By presenting a depth of understanding about how woven textiles are produced, and the physical labour that can go into them, helps us grasp the realities of our textiles.

Many of us take textiles for granted as we live in a place where they are so accessible, and so removed from where and how they are produced. We hope to facilitate some simple weaving with textile waste, demonstrate yarn spinning, and engage in conversations related to textiles and waste.

When entering Micro Mill you will be welcomed by one of our lovely facilitators, offered a drink, and invited to contribute to the community woven waste loom. We’ll run you through the basics and you are welcome to weave for as long or as little as you like, as well there is opportunity to learn about spinning. You’ll be welcome to hang out in our lounge for a yarn with the facilitators and others in the space, or read through some textiles and waste related resources.

Genevieve Rae is a textile and photography artist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, interested in engaging communities in art and urban practices of honouring and caring for our environments. Primarily a weaver exploring multispecies symbiosis and human relationships with materials and waste. This project explores multispecies philosophy through mycelium materials and interactions with an outdoor woven tapestry.
