Diagrammatica is a large-scale participatory installation combining sculpture, live film, spatial sound and improvised music. The work creates an evolving immersive environment that visitors can observe, or choose to actively participate in. The installation runs continuously, creating an evolving audiovisual environment that changes throughout the day.
From the foyer, visitors encounter a large cinematic projection and an immersive soundscape. For many people it will simply be a striking backdrop to the everyday life of the station. For others it becomes something to step into and explore more deeply.
Diagrammatica works especially well in places where people move through space at different rhythms. Someone waiting for a train might stop for a few minutes and watch. Others may stay longer, return later, or choose to enter the making space and take part in shaping the work.
The project supports different levels of engagement. It can be experienced quickly and casually, or as a more immersive participatory encounter. The result is a visually compelling installation that brings energy and curiosity to the station while fitting easily into the everyday flow of people passing through.
Diagrammatica is produced by Strange Engine, a Melbourne based organization, run by NZ artist Jason Maling. Strange Engine is dedicated to developing ambitious projects that engage new audiences in unusual spaces. The organisation has a strong track record of producing technically complex projects in civic environments.
