Good Luck Craft Club
monthly asian craft workshops facilitated by Rose, jem + jun
Location: TBC
First date: Sunday March 1st - 2pm - 5pm, then monthly.
First theme: Celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse with us and learn to make your own good luck (Pan Chang) knot with Jun.
As Asian arts practitioners based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, we know Wellington is home to more than a few Asian artists working across multiple disciplines. We also know many of us are searching for a way to forge a more sustainable sense of shared community. When we have had the opportunity to meet and connect as Asian artists here in Wellington, the space and conversations are always nourishing and invigorating, leaving us wanting more.
Join us monthly from 2pm for the workshops ($15 per person, email goodluckcraftclub@gmail.com to register), or swing by from 3pm and BYOC (bring your own craft) for free - arrive when you like, leave when you want! We are also starting a Community Craft Box - help us fill it, or take some new-to-you supplies home.
Facilitators will host and ensure the comfort and safety of manuhiri, supporting and drawing connections between the people in the room as well as in the community.
Each event will have a main craft theme (Chinese knotwork, crochet, life drawing etc), but attendees can work on their own craft as well.
Hosts will provide some materials in line with the craft theme (i.e. yarn, paper, thread, scrap fabric, etc), We encourage participants to bring their own materials and projects of any craft or art form - all are welcome!
Good Luck Craft Clubs goal in providing a space for Asian arts practitioners in Pōneke is to remove as many barriers as possible, making it easy to connect. While some events may be themed around a craft or festival that aligns with a particular culture or identity, the focus is less on providing access to cultural experiences and more on providing access to each other.
Artists bio:
"We are Rose, Jem, and Jun, three Asian arts practitioners based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (we also hold identities including queer and disabled/neurodiverse, lived experience that walks with us through everything we do). Between us, we have a wide range of event/project management skills and arts/crafts skills, as well as broad connections amongst pan-Asian artists in the Wellington region, and personal experience navigating our own relationships with our diaspora identities and invisibilisation as Asians in Aotearoa.
