A pilot scheme for a resource library for the independent theatre community in Wellington. This project has been brought to reality by Trick of the Light, Barbarian Productions, Fiē Neo, Marcus McShane & Anne-Lisa Noordover.

Note: Scales are to measure all of the waste diverted from the landfill

A set created for a piece of theatre reaches the end of its life when the production is finished, and while the resources could potentially be re-used and recycled, storage is often expensive or inconvenient, as is finding a new owner. It is often cheaper or more practical for these materials to end up in landfill, and there is always a rush to get a set out of a venue, so that the next production can begin setting up. Likewise, some materials needed on a short-term basis can be cheaper to buy than to hire, such as cones and fluorescent jackets. The current problem for practitioners is that no one has enough space to store their things – people have items that they could share, though it mostly only happens in closed groups and is not openly accessible. Providing a space where materials can be stored and used by other people who need them means reducing the need to buy new, and reducing what ends up in landfill. With a one stop shop like this, it allows people a range of pre-used goods to choose from and prevents the use and then dumping of virgin materials.

The pilot will provide an excellent opportunity to capture/estimate waste minimisation data by documenting the number of goods diverted from landfill to reuse and the potential amount of virgin materials saved from use.

We believe in the power of communities and our venue will serve as a community building space in which arts practitioners can meet each other and be more connected.
