Kia kawea tātou e te rēhia

Let us be taken by joy and entertainment

Whare Tapere, inspired by the rich cultural traditions of Māori and Pasifika communities, are the heart and soul of our artistic and cultural tapestry. These iwi-community 'houses' serve as vibrant hubs for storytelling, dance, music, and so much more. In these spaces, communities come together to revel in the joys of life, uniting people of all backgrounds to celebrate their diverse cultures. They offer a sanctuary for Māori and Pasifika creatives to convene, collaborate, and collectively weave the intricate tapestry of our cities' pūrākau, the cherished stories that define us.

The essence of this activation lies in its profound mission to unite hapori, the community, and empower it to be self-sustaining. It is a catalyst, an idea that we eagerly anticipate watching flourish from its inception. Whare Tapere is more than a physical space; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of community, creativity, and cultural enrichment, a testament to the harmonious future we aspire to create.

First evening of kōrero was held at 115 Taranaki St on July 27th, providing a platform to discuss the idea of Holding Space from an indigenous arts perspective. Coordinated by Herbee Bartley of Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts at Massey University. Hosted by Shannon Te Ao (Artist and Senior lecturer at Massey University), the panel included Kurt Komene (Taranaki Whānui, Te Āti Awa artist and cultural practitioner.), Tupe Lualua (Director & dancer of Le Moana), Ani O’Neill (Multi-disciplinary artist & member of Pacific Sisters Collective) & Ash Holwell (Taranaki St property owner & community facilitator).
